Why meters are the base
Any length conversion can be written as a ratio of two factors to the meter. One inch is 0.0254 m. One foot is 0.3048 m. One mile is 1609.344 m. Multiplying by the source factor and dividing by the destination factor keeps every pair consistent, including identity conversions and reverse conversions.
Negative lengths are rejected because a physical distance is not negative in this calculator. Zero is allowed and converts to zero.
